What is Public Speaking?
Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a structured and deliberate way to inform, influence, or amuse.
It conveys messages through language using voice and body to communicate. It is one of the most challenging exercises in the professional field if you lack preparation.
Here are exercises and training techniques to do at home or before an intervention to overcome your shyness, manage your stress, and ideally succeed in your future public speaking.

When we speak, the way we gesture can help hold attention and emphasize specific points of the speech.
The gesture, however, has to be natural so that it does not cause the opposite effect. The hands must accompany the reasoning in a flow of naturalness that involves the listener.
- Face a mirror, start saying a text and observe the movements you make with your arms and hands;
- Try to center this movement above the waistline, and don’t hurry to gesture.
- Readout loud
An excellent way to train communication is by reading texts aloud and, preferably, recording them so that you can take a critical look at your oratory and make improvements.
In addition, you can vary the reading rhythms and different test intonations, speaking softer or louder.
- Do daily reading exercises in a loud voice lasting two to three minutes.
- Take any text, and it can be a newspaper or magazine article, and read it by placing an obstacle in your mouth, like a bent finger, stuck between your teeth, as if you were angry – without forcing;
- Control your breath
It is imperative to know how to breathe while we speak; faced with this, the first thing is to talk calmly, making short pauses between sentences.
- Breathe through your diaphragm for more control.
- Look in a mirror and take a deep breath. If your shoulders rise, it’s because you’re breathing through your chest, not your diaphragm.
- Inhale and see if you can expand your rib cage without moving your shoulders and chest.
- Before and after showering, wrap a towel around your waist, inhale and try to move the towel without moving your shoulders or chest.
- Breathe out slowly, and the next time the breath comes out, say, “Ah .”Repeat this process ten times.
- It will be easier to speak loudly and clearly when you say “Ah” with your breath coming from your diaphragm.
- Practice hard to make the sound even louder and smoother and, if necessary, take a few breaths through your chest to compare the sounds.
Proper breathing during speech helps calm and improve oratory, making it more paused and understandable.
- Facial Movements
Some facial exercises can increase your speaking skills.
For example, grimacing, clicking your tongue, and talking with a cork between your teeth can help you improve the articulation of sounds and make your pronunciation clearer.
One tool that can help you a lot is a pen. That’s right, a pen. If you put a pen between your teeth and start talking or reading, your diction will improve.
- Set a Roadmap and hear yourself
One of the best ways to improve how you speak is to listen to yourself. Usually, when we are talking, we overlook our faults.
- Put a tape recorder in the back of the room and say a few sentences to verify that the listener who would be at the same distance as if you find the recording device you will know if you should speak louder or lower;
- If you can, speak in environments with different dimensions to make different assessments.
We often commit language vices that we are not aware of or mistakes in the pronunciation of certain words.
That’s why it’s recommended that you prepare a script of what you want to say and rehearse by recording your speech.
When listening to your recordings, you will automatically identify what needs to be improved and start correcting yourself.
This will give you much more security and property to talk to your colleagues.
- Talk to a wall
Challenge yourself to talk to a wall for at least two minutes straight. Why? One of the most significant factors that instantly lowers your confidence and energy levels when speaking to an audience is facial expressions and reactions.
Suppose you can practice holding a conversation or part of your presentation with the same level of energy and volume. In that case, you’ll be able to carry through a presentation or speech even if the audience isn’t smiling at you.

Go to YouTube. Watch other professional speakers distinguish what they do with their voice and body language to capture attention.
Find five things they did well that you can incorporate into your workouts.
- Set a goal
Set a new goal; every time you talk to someone, you need to stay aware of the number of times you use verbal tics and filler words (such as: uh, so, like, etc.).
This will help you pay attention to your choice of words and the frequency of these tics in your sentences.
Oratory is a skill. And not just any skill: one of the most important in the current scenario, where everything goes through face–to–face or digital communication.
Because it is a skill (and not a gift, as many imagine), it takes time and practice to develop and improve your techniques.
